Malton
Malton is a quiet Yorkshire market town with lots of locally owned businesses serving the tourist market and the local community. It is an ideal location for exploring the North York Moors, the Yorkshire coast and the Wolds.
There are lots of shops including outdoor clothing, agricultural supplies, sweet shops, cafes, restaurants, antique and bric, shoes, art and crafts, equestrian supplies and the usual pubs and hotels. Accommodation is offered in the pubs and the two hotels and the prices are reasonable. There are Holiday cottages, touring caravan and camp sites located within easy reach of the town. The Derwent Swimming pool is great for kids and Malton and Norton Golf Club offers lessons and is open all year round, weather permitting.
Malton is famous for its horse-racing with many stables close to the town and attractions located just outside of Malton include Flamingo Land Theme Park, Zoo and Holiday Village, Eden Camp History Museum and the roman fort of Derventio, which is on the main road just outside of Malton. Six miles east of Malton in the Wolds is where the church of Wharram Percy and the village remains can be found, deserted following the Black Death in 1310. Home of 'Brideshead Revisited' Castle Howard is 6 miles from Malton. The House is open to the public during the summer whilst the grounds, cafe and gardens are open all year round. The magnificent ruins of Kirkham Priory near Huttons Ambo run alongside the River Derwent, south of Malton. Around the area there are many walks through pretty villages and the Howardian Hill's bluebells in the Spring are of particular note. (The Howardian Hills have been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
Malton is easily accessible by car on the A64 between York and Scarborough. Its popular railway station is used to travel to York or Scarborough for the day and is only a 40 minute journey. it even travels all the way to Leeds and Manchester.
