Barnard Castle
Home > Barnard Castle | Barnard Castle is home to the magnificent French style chateau ' Bowes Museum' containing a great collection of 15th-19th century European art. Special events are held throughout the year - visit http://www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk for more details. The town has some of the best antique shops in the North of England, most within the area known as The Bank. The Market Place is in the centre of the town and comes alive on Wednesday's market day. The market is dominated by an unusual Octagonal 'Market Cross' locally known as the Butter Mart. |
| The ruin of Barnard's castle overlooks the River Tees. In the past it played host to many famous historical characters including Richard III, Henry VII and Warwick the Kingmaker. Today it is owned by British Heritage and open throughout the year to the public. Egglestone Abbey, dating from the 12th Century and now derelict, lies on the outskirts of Barnard Castle also overlooking the Tees. Many grave stones of unknown abbots or patrons are in the centre of this British Heritage run site. |
Located less than an hour from Barnard Castle is Beamish Museum, an open-air attraction based on the story of the North East people between 1825 and 1913 and open all year. Thorpe Farm Centre offers a falconry centre, farm shops and animals, in addition to an Aladdin’s cave of architectural and salvaged antiques and a bistro. It’s a great day out for all the family.
