Kirkby Lonsdale

Home > Kirkby Lonsdale

The River Lune passes through the rocky channels to the old "Devil's Bridge". The Vale of Lune has been popular with artists in particular Constable and Turner; who painted many of the landscapes in and around the area. The view over the River Lune and the valley has been described by Ruskin as the most beautiful view in England. The town was awarded a National Tourism Award in 1997 for its un spoilt features, including the 11th century Norman parish church.
There are many natural attractions nearby, including Windermere and the southern Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the 3 peaks of Ingleborough; Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent. Levens Hall and Sizergh Castle provide historic houses close-by and the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is south of Kirkby Lonsdale. In the first week of September the town turns it clock back to the Victorian age with dressing up, street vendors and fun and games.
Kirkby Lonsdale is situated right in the extreme south-east corner of Cumbria, next to the Lancashire border and just 3 miles from the edge of North-West Yorkshire.
